I am torn inbetween the two...because I really want...
I know its kind of late in my journey to start switching up but I am thinking that I want the DS instead of RNY. This is such a hard choice. So tell me beautiful black people of BAF, if you had the choice all over again which one would you do or would you change at all, why and/or why not?

If I had to do it all over again I would not change the type of surgery that I have had. I love my band and I have daily "battles of the band" but it reminds me who is boss. There is only one thing I would change and that would be to make sure that I took full advantage of the "honeymoon period."
People are so worried about what they eat between Christmas and the New Year, but they really should be worried about what they eat between the New Year and Christmas. ~Author Unknown
I didn't choose the DS mainly out of fear of them actually removing part of the stomach. I needed the reassurance that if something went wrong with my RNY that they would still have enough parts in there to work with for a revision. After being on OH for almost 5 years though, I haven't read very many stories of DS'ers having any serious problems. If I had to have WLS today, I'd probably pick the DS. They have a lot more freedom in what they can eat and they tend to do better long term with their weight loss.

RNY or the DS would NOT be options for me because of my lifestyle, my job requires me to be available MOST of the time and I work in a corporate environment and I cannot afford to have "unpleasant side effects" with my surgery at work, not saying there are not unpleasant side effects with my lap band, but they ARE CONTROLLABLE...meaning the only thing bad that can happen is being too tight and if my band tightens up to cause frequent slimming or vomiting I can just go to the doc and get a small amount of saline removed and I would be back to normal immediately.
Also knowing other people that have had RNY they had to hit the gym and eat mostly proteins just like I do to have acceptable weight loss, although RNY is QUICKER weight loss that was NOT my most important factor when making my final decision to choose, MY reasoning for choosing the band was lifetime adjustable, safer and can be easy removed if need be.
The only other weight surgery that I would consider is the Sleeve, that seems to be a much better alternative FOR ME, I have no desire to dump or get sick if I eat sweets, I like to eat my food in peace regardless if I cheat or not....I just wanted something to limit my food intake and make me feel fuller quicker and my band is doing just that 4 years and counting, I am also pleased with my results and I STILL ate sweets and loss weight too.
I guess what you need to do is learn about each surgery, DS, RNY, BAND, OR sleeve and see which one fits your lifestyle and what you are willing to deal with or live with, ALL have their own sets of pros and cons. The DS, RNY SLEEVE OR BAND IS NOT for everyone, some people do better with malabsorption, and some people don't need that to lose weight. If I was a lightweight there is NO way I would get malabsorptive procedure; the risk outweigh the benefits, but that's just me.....
Good luck with your decision.
I say you gotta really look at the two to truly know what will work better for you. For me - the dumping is what *I* need - you may not be a sweet/carb hound and that might not be a big issue for you. I also will say that I eat a regular amount of food - don't get twisted into you'll never eat more than 5 bites ever again.... NOT!!! Now, I am not knocking down buffets either, but it's very sensible. I LIKE ordering an appetizer and that's ALL........
So, in the end, you will know what is right for YOU - and once you make that decision - don't look back. I always say that every decision I make is the best one given the cir****tances and information I had at the time - therefore, I don't do regrets - I simply make decisions.

What...I'm jus sayin.....RNY was good for me, but what I now know of DS, if I would have been covered for it, I would have choosen that. More freedom with eating and it seems the WL results may have been better.
